YORK, Maine — For the first time, visitors to Long Sands Beach are able to dispose of their trash in solar-powered trash compactors and their cans and bottles in recycling bins.

Michael Sullivan, director of the York Parks and Recreation Department, said once the town approved the four solar-powered trash compactors, it was determined that it also was time to have recycling bins at the beach.

"We're trying to change the etiquette at the beach and the way people take care of their trash," he said Monday as the compactors and recycling bins were put in place. " In order to do that, we have stepped up to the plate, to set a higher example."

Certainly, the so-called "Big Belly" trash compactors come at a higher price - $3,700 apiece - but Sullivan said if it means fewer runs for the crews to pick up the trash, they could provide increased efficiency, as well as cleanliness.
