New solar-powered trash cans put the squeeze on downtown mess

SANTA CRUZ — Pacific Avenue's garbage cans, overflowing with coffee cups and pizza boxes, are the subject of a new experiment.
A solar-powered garbage can that automatically compacts trash was tested last month in front of El Palomar Restaurant. Its success has city leaders ready to "press the mess." They are considering buying four permanent sun-powered compactors to put the squeeze on the weekend waste understaffed city crews can't always clean up.
