As one of the 10 projects, the city plans to buy 20 solar trash cans for $53,000. The money to purchase the cans comes from $586,000 the city received in federal stimulus dollars for energy efficiency projects.
The city estimates it will save $1,102 in labor costs every week, which will result in $57,304 yearly. The city also expects to save at a minimum $1,200 in fuel costs, because staff will not have to drive trucks to check the cans as often.
