Those boxy contraptions on Pacific Avenue that look like a mailbox with its legs cut off are actually the city's two new solar-powered garbage cans, which were installed Tuesday.
One is at Church Street by the Santa Cruz Cinema 9 and the other is in front of the Del Mar movie theater - two high-traffic areas where trash quickly piles up.
Called BigBellys, the silent, leakproof devices automatically compact trash to as much as a 10th of its original volume, reducing the need for pickups...
